About The Registry
The United Kingdom (UK) Ship Register is one of the world’s most
popular choices for the registration of yachts. The UK is also one of the world’s
leading maritime nations with London as the world’s
foremost location for maritime business services. The management and administration of
their yacht registration system is quite efficient and allows the ability to seek assistance
from any British Consulate or Embassy in the world.
Registration Office
The British yacht registry is administered by the Maritime and
Coast Guard Agency. Its centralized Registry of Shipping and Seamen office is located in Cardiff, Wales.
Registration Requirements
The UK Ship Register will accept private pleasure yachts and commercial yachts of any size that are based and operated anywhere
in the world with certain qualifications. If the vessel is longer than 24 meters, a
surveyor will need to arrange for a mandatory certification.
The United Kingdom yacht registry will accept private owners
who in addition to the UK are EU nationals, UK companies and EEA companies, all Commonwealth
citizens and countries and citizens and companies of the following countries: Argentina, Aruba,
Bahrain, Brazil, the Canary Islands, China (including Hong Kong), the Faroe Islands, Haiti,
Israel, Japan, Liberia, Madeira, the Marshall Islands, Monaco, Panama, South Korea, Switzerland,
Surinam, the United Arab Emirates and the United States of America. For all other nationalities, it
will become necessary to set up a British LTD as a holding company for ownership of the vessel.
Recording Methods
A certificate of UK vessel registration
provides evidence of nationality, evidence of ownership, confers a unique name and registration number.
It also offers the capacity to record vessel mortgages.
Registration Search
A transcript of registry showing ownership, any mortgages, and
vessel particulars may be obtained from the registrar's office or through a private servicing
company.
