Registry Overview

The Republic of Seychelles provides a national registration system for yachts and ships. The registry is administered by the Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine. Seychelles is one of the most attractive and well-known jurisdictions for offshore yacht registration. It is a member of the UN, the Commonwealth of Nations, the Indian Ocean Commission, and the International Maritime Organization. This means that Seychelles has adopted appropriate laws and regulations ensuring compliance with international standards. Yachts are registered under Seychelles flag in accordance with the Merchant Shipping Act of 1992.The attractive registration laws enhance luxury yacht registrations. Seychelles, officially known as the Republic of Seychelles, is an island country in the Indian Ocean at the eastern edge of the Somali Sea. It consists of 115 islands. French and English are official languages along with Seychellois Creole, which is a French-based creole language. Most business in Seychelles is conducted in English.

Registration Office

The Seychelles yacht registry office is headquartered in Victoria on the island of Mahe. It also has provisions for consular and diplomatic representatives abroad to issue provisional certificates of registration to vessels satisfying the ownership and registration criteria.

Registration Requirements

In order to qualify for the Seychelles registry, the yacht must not be older than 15 years. If the vessel is longer than 20 meters, then it has to be surveyed by one of the recognized classification societies; Yacht registration is available for vessels owned by Seychelles citizens and domestic Corporations. However, a Seychelles International Business Company (IBC) can be incorporated and act as a vessel owning company. This effectively opens the registry to all foreign citizens .

Recording Methods

The Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration has provisions for recording mortgages against vessels which are enrolled in the registry. This can be accomplished upon presentation of the instrument of mortgage to the registrar. In the case of a provisionally registered ship where the original title of ownership has not been submitted, the mortgage will only be recorded upon confirmation that it was executed by the true owner.

Registration Search

Transcripts of registry showing ownership, mortgages, and vessel particulars can be obtained from the Seychelles yacht registrar or a private servicing company.
