Registry Overview
The Langkawi International Yacht Registry or LIYR is an exclusive
system operated by the Director General of Marine in Malaysia. This is fast becoming the vessel flag
registration of choice as it offers tax breaks and more operational freedom. It is much more cost-effective than a number of other jurisdictions and less process intensive when compared to many other countries.
The LIYR is recognized around the world and was designed specifically for the purpose of
international usage.
Langkawi is situated on Malaysia's west coast and surrounded by a beautiful turquoise sea. Malay is the official language,
although English is widely spoken and understood by the locals.
Registration Office
The Langkawi International Yacht Registry (LIYR) office is
located at Telaga Harbour Park, Pantai Kok. Matters of registry are processed by
the Director General of Marine at the Malaysian Marine Department in Port Klang.
Registration Requirements
The Langkawi International Yacht Registry (LIYR) is open
to all sailboats, powerboats and super yachts.
Anyone can register a
yacht in Malaysia as there are no citizenship or resident requirements. Corporations must however have an established local agent or become
registered in Malaysia.
Recording Methods
The Langkawi Yacht Registry has provisions for recording mortgages against vessels.
Registration Search
A transcript of Langkawi registry showing ownership, mortgages, and vessel particulars is available from the
Registrar or through a
private servicing agency.
