Registry Overview
Mauritius has national registration system for ships and yachts
which is administered
by the Director of Shipping for the
Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries, and Shipping.
This island country is situated in the West of the Indian Ocean. The Republic of Mauritius has a
presidential democracy with the president acting as the Head of the
State and Commander in Chief. The Prime Minister acts as Head of Government, with full executive powers. English is the official language
of Mauritius,
although French is commonly spoken.
Registration Office
The Mauritius yacht registry office is headquartered in Port Louis. Any Mauritius worldwide consul is also
authorized to act for the government regarding the registration of ships and yachts under the flag.
Registration Requirements
Yachts of all types will qualify for the Mauritius Ship
Registry. This incudes those which are privately owned for leisure or for business, still under
construction, fishing vessels, and submersible crafts.
The Mauritius
Ship Registry entitles citizens of Mauritius, companies incorporated in Mauritius, and maritime entities such as partnerships, societies, or associations to register their vessels.
A non-Mauritian owner wishing to register a vessel in Mauritius may either elect a resident to act as its representative or may
incorporate an offshore company in Mauritius and authorize the company to register the vessel on its behalf.
Recording Methods
Mauritius has provisions for recording mortgages against
registered vessels. These are administered by the Director of Shipping. Deeds of mortgage are
recorded in the order in which they are received.
The registrar will then sign on each deed of mortgage a statement to the effect that it has been registered.
Registration Search
On payment of the prescribed fee, any interested person may obtain a transcript of
register of any Mauritius vessel from the Director of Shipping. This will show the
ownership, any mortgages, and vessel particulars. Transcripts may also be obtained through
private servicing agencies.
