Registry Overview

The St. Kitts & Nevis International Ship Registry (SKANReg) provides a national flagging system for the registry of yachts. The registry commenced operations in 2005. By the end of 2019 it had registered over 2500 vessels and currently has over 2.5million tons registered. It is recognized for its sound mortgage legislation, which being based on English Law, is known, trusted and respected the world over. Saint Kitts and Nevis, officially known as the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, is an island country in the West Indies. English is the official language, although Saint Kitts Creole is also widely spoken.

Registration Office

The St. Kitts and Nevis yacht registry's head office is located in London spanning the time zones of the major shipping centers of the world. It also has a network of over forty maritime registrars that can provide ship and mortgage registrations, so an owner/manager can deal with such matters in his/her own time zone, own language and with minimum hassle.

Registration Requirements

The St. Kitts & Nevis registry will accept all types of yachts, subject to certain qualifications. This includes yachts and non-propelled vessels and there is no lower size, tonnage, or length limit. A vessel that does not engage in the carriage of paying passengers and solely used by the owner for pleasure will have fewer requirements. However, as soon as the yacht is used to carry passengers for hire, the yacht becomes a commercial vessel and is then subject to greater regulation. There are no restrictions on ownership of St. Kitts and Nevis yachts, this being available to St. Kitts & Nevis corporations, foreign corporations and individuals. When a vessel is first registered with St. Kitts & Nevis and is owned by a St. Kitts & Nevis corporation having its registered office in the Federation or a St. Kitts & Nevis national or citizen resident in the Federation, that owner will be entitled to a 50% reduction off the Registration fee. Full ownership requirements are available by visiting their website.

Recording Methods

St. Kitts & Nevis has provisions for recording mortgages against yachts which are enrolled in the registry. Under the Merchant Shipping Act, Cap 7.05, vessels registered in St. Kitts & Nevis may be made as security for the repayment of a loan.

Registration Search

Transcripts of registry showing ownership, mortgages, and vessel particulars are available from the St. Kitts & Nevis home registry office, its network of registrars, or a private service company.
