Registry Overview

Jamaica has a well established yacht registry and flagging system which is administered by the Ship Registry office in Kingston. Jamaica is an island country located in the Caribbean Sea. It is governed by a parliamentary democracy which is supported by a constitutional monarchy. The official language of Jamaica is English, although its population is bilingual.

The yacht registry office is located in Kingston and supports a number of deputy registrars throughout the world.

Registration Requirements

The Jamaica Ship Registry will accept all types yachts subject to certain qualifications. There are no minimum tonnage requirements, although the vessel must be established as seaworthy when flying the Jamaican flag. Any entity established with the authority to own vessels, whether or not established in Jamaica, can be registered as the owner of a Jamaican yacht. There is no requirement for incorporation in Jamaica and foreign entities need only engage a domestic individual or entity as an authorized representative. 

Recording Methods

The Maritime Authority of Jamaica has provisions for recording vessel mortgages. These are administered by the Jamaica Ship Registry.

Registration Search

Transcripts of registry showing ownership, mortgages, and vessel particulars are available from the registry office, a deputy registrar, or a registration service company.
