Registry Overview
Antigua and Barbuda offers a national system for registering yachts which is administered by the Department of Marine Services and Merchant Shipping
(ADOMS). It operates within the regulatory dimension of the International Maritime Shipping Industry.
Antigua and Barbuda
is a sovereign state in the West Indies and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. English is its official language.
Yachts registered in this country are flagged under its own ensign.
Registration Office
The Department of Marine Services and Merchant Shipping office is located in St. John's, Antigua. It is supported by two
satellite offices in Germany – ADOMS Oldenburg and ADOMS Inspection and Investigation Division (ADOMS IID), Elsfleth. Contact information can be found on
it's website.
Registration Requirements
A yacht may be registered in Antigua and Barbuda if it is owned or bareboat chartered by a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda,
a national of a CARICOM Member State, or a firm or company incorporated or registered under the laws of Antigua and Barbuda. A yacht may also be registered
if the owner or bareboat charterer appoints a principal representative in Antigua and Barbuda.
Recording Provisions
Multiple mortgages can be recorded against an Antigua and Barbuda registered yacht. These can be filed through either the
Antigua office in St John’s or in Oldenburg, Germany. Mortgages cannot be filed against a bareboat registered yacht which has its underlying
registry outside of Antigua and Barbuda. Mortgages gain priority on a chronological basis where the earliest takes precedence while it remains registered.
The consent of the mortgagee is required for any changes to ownership or registration status.
