Minnesota Boat Registration and Title Search
Minnesota boat registration and title database with record search lookups.
Introduction
Boat registration and title records in Minnesota are maintained in a database administered by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Access to the database is made available for boat owners and certain entitled parties. This summary will provide some insights on how to lookup and request boat registration or title information in the State of Minnesota.
Online Access
Minnesota does not offer an online boat registration or title search lookup service. Boat owners may access the database online, but only for renewal purposes upon first establishing an account.
Telephone Access
The Minnesota DNR may confirm the presence of a boat hull identification number in the database system and verify a registration or title certificate in hand by telephone. However, it will not likely provide other detailed information. DNR contact information is available in the Referrals.
Boat Record Request Form
Boat registration and title records may be obtained by submitting a record request form to the DNR. Such data is, however, only available to the owner, upon the owner's authorization and other entitled parties as described on the form.
Historical Records
Historical and archived boat registration or title records are available from the Minnesota DNR in conjunction with the records access information provided in this page. However, boat records are not maintained indefinitely.
Bulk Records
Boat registration records in the Minnesota may be available as bulk downloads to certain qualified entities. Contact the DNR for more information.
Nationwide System
The State of Minnesota is one of the few states that does not currently participate in the Vessel Identification System which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. This is a nationwide database wherein most states contribute boat registration data in real-time. Access is only available, however, to law enforcement agencies and other governmental institutions. Anyone concerned about a boat that may have been stolen, abandoned, involved in an incident or is being utilized for illicit activities in state jurisdictional areas should contact a local enforcement agency or boat registration office.
This information is subject to change and should be confirmed with the respective agency.
