Introduction
Michigan boat registration and title records are maintained in a searchable database administered by the Department of State (MDOS). Boat and vehicle records are integrated into the same system. Access to such data is available for owners, qualified parties and the general public. The following guidelines will provide some insights on how to lookup boat registration information and obtain current or historical records in the State of Michigan.
Online Access
The Michigan Department of State provides online search portals for boat registrations, liens, and abandoned boats. Although designed for vehicles, these also apply to boats. They are searchable by the hull identification number and/or state registration number. Data provided from these searches is limited to basic boat information, title type and issue date. It will also indicate whether there are any liens recorded and identify any reported salvage or damaged information. Complete details must be further obtained by submitting a record request. The online portals can furthermore be used for boat registration renewals.
Telephone Access
The Michigan DOS may confirm the presence of a hull identification number in their system and verify a title or registration certificate in hand by telephone. Boat Record Request
Boat registration, title and historical records may be obtained from the Michigan DOS by submitting the appropriate record request form. Although designed for vehicles these are also applicable for boats. There is a separate form for owners and non-owners. Non-owners must qualify according to privacy rules Unless an owner has provided a records release authorization. Fee schedules and submission information is shown on both forms.
Historical Records
Historical or archived boat registration records are available from the Michigan DOS by submitting a boat record request form. Such data is not, however, maintained indefinitely.
Bulk Records
Boat records downloads and online access by subscription are available from the Michigan DOS bulk records portal.
Nationwide System
Michigan subscribes to the Vessel Identification System which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. This is a nationwide database wherein most states contribute boat registration data in real-time. Access is only available, however, to law enforcement agencies and other governmental institutions. Anyone concerned about a boat that may have been stolen, abandoned, involved in an incident or is being utilized for illicit activities in state jurisdictional areas should contact a local enforcement agency or boat registration office.
