Florida Boat Registration and Title Search

Florida boat registration and title database with record search lookups.

Introduction

Florida boat registration and title records are maintained in a searchable database administered by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Access to such data is available for owners, qualified parties and the general public. The following guidelines will provide some insights on how to lookup boat registration or title information and obtain current or historical records in the State of Florida.

Online Access

The State of Florida provides an online boat registration search lookup feature that may come as a surprise to many boaters. Although oriented toward vehicles, it also includes information about boats. This is because the Department of Motor Vehicles comingles automobiles and boats within the same database system. The search portal can be accessed from the referrals. Instead of entering vehicle criteria, simply insert the equivalent boat title number and/or hull identification number. The search will generate a report that shows basic information about the boat, its title or registration data, and any recorded liens. It also has a field related to title or salvage branding, although this is in the early stage of implementation. The report does not, however, include the owner's name or address because of privacy restrictions. Any such data must be obtained by submitting a written request from the owner, an authorized party or certain privileged parties. Boat owners in Florida may also access their registration information through the online renewal portal. Such usage is predicated upon establishing a login account.

Telephone Access

The Florida DMV may confirm the presence of a hull identification number in their system and verify a registration or title certificate in hand by telephone. Although, it will not likely provide any further details, especially as related to ownership data. DMV contact information is available in the Referrals.

Record Request

Boat registration, title and historical record copies are available in Florida by submitting a written request form to the DMV. However, this service is only available to owners, owner authorized parties or certain privileged. Submission information can be found on the form itself along with further information about restrictions.

Historical Records

Historical or archived boat registration records are available from the Florida DMV by submitting a record request form. Such data is not, however, maintained indefinitely.

Bulk Records

Bulk vessel registration records are available from the State of Florida. Although this will entail a special contractual arrangement and limited usage of ownership data. Contact the DMV for further information.

Nationwide System

Florida is a participant in the Vessel Identification System which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. This is a nationwide database wherein most states contribute boat registration data in real-time. Access is only available, however, to law enforcement agencies and other governmental institutions. Anyone concerned about a boat that may have been stolen, abandoned, involved in an incident or is being utilized for illicit activities in state jurisdictional areas should contact a local enforcement agency or boat registration office.

This information is subject to change and should be confirmed with the respective agency.
