BoatScopeTM

Important Facts About This Service

Do you guarantee that this service will produce any results?
BoatScopeTM  is the largest database of its kind with more features than any other service. However, we can not guarantee that you will find the desired results in each and every case. This is because our data sources may vary in accuracy or completeness and the system must be properly utilized for optimal results.

Are title and boat registration records available from every state?
Boat registration and titling records are subject to very strict public disclosure rules in most states. Accordingly, we do not include state title or registration records in our searchable databases. However, we do provide links to those states which offer online searches. We also include forms and contact information for ordering record print-outs directly from every state.

Does  BoatScope
TM reveal any liens or encumbrances?
BoatScopeTM includes our own proprietary Marine Lien Claims database. However, this does not include lien or mortgage filings recorded on the state or federal levels. These can only be obtained by filing a direct request with the appropriate recording agency. Instructions, forms, and contact information on how to go about this can be found in the "Search Resources" module of BoatScope.

Which types of vessels are covered in BoatScopeTM?
The databases contain information about all types of vessels including jet skis, dinghies, runabouts, pontoon boats, houseboats, sailboats, motor-yachts, commercial boats, and ships. Most vessels are either Coast Guard documented, state titled, or state registered. The system does provide limited resources for conducting research in foreign countries.

What are your vessel record sources?
Our vessel records are maintained in several relational databases which reside on our web server. These consist of information gathered from governmental, industry, and private resources. The database from which each record is derived will be shown on the summary findings report. However, data acquisition methods are proprietary and can not be disclosed.

When do I receive my search results and detail summaries?
BoatScopeTM  is provided in real-time through a data connection with our web server. In most cases your records can be retrieved in a matter of seconds. Complex and broad searches may however take a bit longer due to the massive number of records which are accessed from multiple databases.

Will the record search determine whether a vessel has a clear history?
Although our data gatherings go a long way in revealing any problems with a particular vessel's background, they are not fully conclusive. There are no resources available to the general public which provide all-encompassing information of this nature. Measures should always be taken to further verify a vessel's condition and historical status.

Are the database records current and accurate?
Although subject to periodic updates, the database records are reasonably up-to-date. As with any data gathering process, the entries are however subject to typographical errors and certain data may have been overlooked. Additional or supplemental research is always recommended.

Can the database be searched on short identification numbers from older vessels?
Yes, hull numbers of a single digit can be entered into the system. However, the results may include several non-related vessels because anything less than 12 characters is not viewed as a unique vessel identifier. Such numbers can not be verified with the hull number checking feature as this applies only to federal standards established on November 1, 1972.

Does the vessel documentation database cover vessels which are no longer documented?

The vessel documentation database covers those which are currently documented and most which have dropped out of documentation over the past ten years. However, the Supplemental Data link in our Search Resources module does provide a link to the Coast Guard's PSIX database which identifies vessels that have been deleted from documentation.

Does the vessel documentation search reveal a vessel owner's name and address?
Although corporate and other business entity ownership information is still available, the Coast Guard is now restricting owner names and addresses for indifivuals. In order to determine such information it will be necessary to order an abstract of title.

How can I be assured of a complete vessel history, lien, ownership, and background search?
The Vessel Research Handbook, which accompanies this service, will answer many of these questions. However, there are no absolute assurances you will ever identify every possible lien and all historical facts regarding a particular vessel. As a prospective buyer, you should enlist those protections afforded by an attorney, surveyor, or insurance agent.

Does your system utilize cookies?
In order to streamline our login and page navigation features, we do make limited use of cookies. However, they are of a short term duration and are never used to gather personal information or computer specifications. Most browsers automatically allow the use of cookies as they are quite common in most database applications.

Can a data access key be implemented by multiple users?
The terms of our memberships allow for usage of a particular data key only by the purchasing client. Our system is designed to detect simultaneous or unauthorized instances of a login and service may become disrupted under such circumstances.  Companies that need multiple data keys may contact us for information about special bulk purchases.

What is your membership renewal policy?
We do not believe that open-ended or unauthorized credit card billings serve the best interests of our members. You should accordingly select a membership term that best suits your needs. Long term clients who wish to apply for terms of more than 360 days may contact our customer support for special arrangements.

How responsive is your customer support?
Customer satisfaction is one of our primary concerns as we strive to earn the loyalty of each and every member.  We make every effort to maintain a trouble free system with intuitive data input modules. However, in those cases where support is needed you can be assured of a very quick and thorough response.
